What the official page says
Source: Alaska's Lemon Law (Alaska Department of Law, Consumer Protection) (read 2026-10-17). This is a summary of that page, not the statute. Exact tests, exclusions and deadlines are on the official page and in the statute, and may have changed.
- The page says the Lemon Law (AS 45.45.300) protects buyers of new motor vehicles and does not apply to used vehicles.
- The page defines a reasonable number of attempts as the same defect repaired three or more times during the express warranty term or the one-year period after delivery to the original owner, whichever ends first, with the defect still present.
- The page also describes an out-of-service test: a total of 30 or more business days for repair during that same period.
- The defect must substantially impair the use or market value of the vehicle, and must not result from alteration, abuse or neglect by the owner or someone other than the dealer or repairing agent.
- The page says the owner must give written notice by certified mail to the manufacturer and its dealer or repairing agent, and the manufacturer may then make a final repair attempt within 30 days after receiving the notice.
- The page says that if the manufacturer has an informal dispute procedure approved by the Attorney General, the owner must use it before going to court under the lemon law; decisions are binding on the manufacturer but not on the consumer.
Numbers the page states
| Item | As stated on the official page |
|---|---|
| Same defect repaired | 3 or more times (warranty term or 1 year, whichever ends first) |
| Out of service | 30 or more business days (same period) |
Counting rules differ (calendar days vs. business days, what counts as a repair attempt). Use the repair log tool to organize dates, then confirm how your state counts.
Industry arbitration program summary (not a government source)
BBB National Programs, which runs the BBB AUTO LINE dispute program, publishes a state summary: BBB AUTO LINE: Alaska lemon law summary (link checked 2026-10-17). It is published by an industry-linked program, so treat it as a starting point and confirm against the state's own page or statute.
What to do first
- Keep every repair order and receipt. See the records checklist.
- Write down dates and mileage for each repair visit with the repair log tool (nothing is saved or sent).
- Read the federal warranty basics and arbitration pages.
- Consider speaking with a licensed attorney in your state about deadlines. Many have free consultations, but we do not recommend any specific one.
